Student Athlete Feature: Megan Hunt

Meet Megan Hunt, a student athlete.

In this third student athlete feature, we introduce you to Megan Hunt – a second-year Fitness and Health Promotion student at Humber College, and a player on the Humber Hawks women’s volleyball team.

Tomas Karageorgos is the sports reporter for EMERGE News NOW, and conducted a Q&A with Megan to talk about how she has been staying active during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was your routine like, pre-pandemic?

Megan Hunt

I’d get up and go to my classes, I usually have an hour or maybe not even to get to practice. I make sure I’m there early so that I can get taped up. Before games we obviously do tape and stuff, before or after practices. Game days I would say are pretty similar to practices, we take both pretty seriously – except we’re all in the zone for games.

For our first month we basically train every day. We have two team lifts then you have two personal lifts that you have to make, and then practice every day. When it was off-season we were doing tournaments – we went to Quebec to play. It’s kind of the same except in-season we had games every other weekend, it wasn’t as consistent so you had a little break. Practice every weekday and lifts four times a week.

How did you balance school and volleyball?

MH

The first month of the season we didn’t have a day off, so that was really really scary – first month of school, first month of volleyball no days off. That was really crazy but honestly I think it was just setting my priorities straight. You also have everyone around you helping you, so for your first year you get a mentor that helps you with your schedule, lays it out and makes sure that you know when everything is due. Then they check in with your grades so that you’re caught up and good. That helped a lot – having guidance from another player helped so that I was reliable. Setting my priorities, and doing what I have to do.

TK

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, how have you been training and keeping fit?

MH

I was on a really good routine and I was working out every day, whether that was a lift or cardio – making sure I was recovering well and everything. It has been a year, everyone is anticipating to be on the court so your motivation fluctuates and obviously you have those dips. Being able to get back on track has been my goal and I’ve been doing well. I focus on school and whatever I can fit in-between I usually get my workout done in the morning so that I don’t have to worry about it or feel guilty about not getting it done.

TK

How have you been keeping in touch with your coaches?

MH

We’re keeping up with our HPC workouts that we do twice a week with team lifts. You’re still accountable for your team lifts and your personal lifts, it’s just over an app and Zoom. The whole team, we meet over Zoom twice a week Mondays and Wednesdays, for an hour and get our workout done.

TK

What do you miss most about playing?

MH

I just miss the competitive atmosphere, that drive. Like when you’re winning a game and you feel like you’re on top of the world. I strive best when I’m competing, I always want to be the best in the room and I want to be noticed. With this quarantine it’s been really hard to improve when there’s no competition so I guess it’s been learning how to compete with myself and make myself better every day. I’ve been missing the competition a lot.

TK

What are some your favourite memories that you’ve made so far?

MH

Something specific that’s kind of interesting – I remember right after we won our game against Cambrian we walked to the gym and we were screaming this song and it was just so awesome, we felt like so in unison that we won together. All those girls are just so competitive too, I’ve never been on a team that has so many women that are fighting for the same spot that can encourage each other at the same time.
