"I chose to attend Guelph-Humber because of the sm "I chose to attend Guelph-Humber because of the small community and mandatory internship component. Having an internship really helped me gain work experience before graduation. I’m grateful I chose UofGH because I would not have gotten a better understanding of different branches of media (PR, marketing, design) if I had chosen a strictly journalism program elsewhere.

"I knew UofGH was right for me when I stepped foot inside the building during my tour. By getting to see the school’s building along with Humber’s facilities, I knew immediately it was the right decision for me.

"My best memories come from living in residence in my first year. There I met some of my best friends who went to both UofGH and Humber College. We would often stay up to the early hours cramming for exams in the cafeteria.

"The most surprising thing about UofGH was the professors really liked getting to know their students, even if it was just through simple hallway chatter. I grew to love many of them just by their personalities and passion for their field.

"My proudest school achievement would be producing articles for Emerge Magazine’s 2020 edition. Producing multiple pieces alongside fellow classmates with quick turnaround times in an especially busy semester was very rewarding in the end.

"One thing future students should know is that UofGH really stands out on a resume! Especially if the hiring manager is an alum. Since graduating in 2020 I have worked with TIFF as a junior social media producer and now recently as a digital coordinator for CTV."

Saving the best for last, we would like to present Saving the best for last, we would like to present our final Instazine team member feature, Jerri, one of our graphic designers!

“Choosing to go to Guelph-Humber was one of the best decisions of my life. I had no clue what I was doing in grade 12 before coming to Guelph-Humber. Since the beginning of high school, my goal was to get into architecture at Waterloo, but in grade 11 I had decided that it wasn’t for me anymore and I was left not knowing what I wanted to do. I talked to my guidance counselor and she suggested media studies at Guelph-Humber. She said it was a good program and that I would still be close to home if I decided to go. After four years here, I can say with confidence that she was right. Media studies is great because the first two years, you get a little dose of everything. Then, in your third year, you get to hone in on your interests and choose a specialization. It felt like I had more time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and I really liked that.”

“For my showcase today, I’ve picked out two before and after projects. The first is kind of a remake of a project I did for my grade 12 photography class. When I did this in high school, I used fake flowers that I found in the props bin, had one key light shining from the top and a mirror below to fill in the shadows. For the remake, I actually went out to Michael’s and picked out a bunch of fake flowers and bought some floral foam to stick the flowers in. I had all the equipment I needed from the media cage and it turned out better than I had imagined.”

“The second project is a remake of the cover for the book Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez. I liked the original cover, but nothing about it really screamed “Scarborough” or even “Toronto” to me. My inspiration for the redesign was the tiles on the TTC subway station walls. To be honest, I've not read the book. I bought the book thinking I’d try to read it, read about 20 pages and never picked it up ever again. So I don’t know if the colour yellow is significant in the book. I figured if it was on the original book cover, I might as well include it in the redesign, just in case it was important later on."

"I chose Guelph-Humber for a few reasons. First an "I chose Guelph-Humber for a few reasons. First and foremost, because of the dual credentials. The degree and diploma combination is such an advantage and looks really good on a resume. Another reason as to why I chose GH is because of their small size. I come from a small town so the tight knit community at the school and the ability to know all my classmates and profs is very comforting to me.

"The most surprising thing about GH is that they have such a wide variety of media equipment for the students to use. There are fully functioning photography studios, a tv studio, a podcast room, and more.

"I was part of the visual showcase for the 2022 Emerge conference and I think that is my proudest school achievement. We put together an interactive gallery as well as a virtual reality gallery that went over really well. We put so much effort and time into putting it together and I’m very proud of the outcome.

"I don’t think I had one moment of realization that I chose the right school; I think that over the last 4 years for me I had a lot of mini moments where I felt so appreciative for the school I chose to become part of. Small things from studying in the learning commons, to working in the studio, and making lifelong friends make me grateful for choosing GH. If I didn’t attend Guelph-Humber I wouldn’t have met the people I did or developed new skills while sharpening my current skills in photography and editing. I don’t think that I would be the person I am today had I not gone to Guelph Humber,  I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true."

I liked the idea of having an intro to all streams for the first two years before specializing. That way if I changed my mind halfway through university, I didn’t have to switch programs completely.

"I have chosen to showcase my portrait and food photography because I really developed a passion for photography over the last 4 years. I originally joined the media studies program for videography, but found that I had a greater passion for photography through the intro courses I took."

"I chose to attend GH because of how the program w "I chose to attend GH because of how the program was set up. I liked getting to know all the different types of media there are first, before jumping into a specific thing right away because when I came in I had no idea what I wanted.

"The moment I realized that I made the right decision was when I met the people in my program; It’s really kinda rare sometimes to meet a lot of good people at one time so coming in here was nice. I’m a very high energy person and sometimes I worry I can be annoying, but everyone here just embraces you which is awesome! The people that I met during my time here are some of the best people I’ve met in my life and seeing so many people passionate about so many different things was amazing because that just drives you to be the best kind of creator you can be.

"My best memory was when I came to the realization that I can walk in here and be whoever I want to be. I can talk to people and feel confident talking to people because I know they’re happy, they’re passionate and they want to do the same kind of stuff that I do; everybody is working to better themselves. So, it’s not a specific memory, it’s just that feeling of knowing you’re in the right place and not having any regrets anymore.

"With my degree I hope to continue to grow my business with the friends I’ve met here. We began a business @avisualint and I hope that we can continue our filmmaking and ultimately I hope to make people feel something from what I create. If I make something happy I want them to feel that; I want to make an impact.

"One piece of advice I have for future students is to just appreciate the people you have around you; you don’t need to be super close with somebody for them to have an impact on you. Just seeing people do what they want to do and be happy with what they’re doing is great, so just appreciate the environment you’re in and approach everything with a positive attitude."

"I decided to attend the University of Guelph-Humber because of the dual diploma/degree programs. I actually started at Guelph-Humber in the justice studies program, before I realized I was spending so much of my time drawing and creating all sorts of art that it would be a waste not to pursue media, my true passion!"

"I've chosen to showcase the projects that best represent me and what I like to do most, even if I am a jack of all trades. The first project displays my photography and photoshop expertise, while the digital artwork is a true reflection of me and my passion for art."
