Indian Makeup Artistry – Meet Meena Sadia

Meena SadiaIndian fashion comes from a maximalist tradition, where more is more. It’s not a surprise that extravagant makeup follows the over-the-top trend. Keeping with tradition, a bare face is a rarity at an Indian function. Whether that’s a bride preparing for her big day or a guest getting glammed up for a wedding, Indian women don’t dull it down. Many preparing for their big celebrations look to professionals for their expertise and skill to bring the beauty of Indian culture to their makeup. To help brides get from plain to party, Toronto-based Meena Sadia, a highly-skilled makeup artist specializing in Indian, Arabic and Pakistani bridal looks , empowers women with the power of makeup.

I have always loved doing makeup. In my teenage years, I started doing makeup on my sisters and friends,” Sadia says. “I then finally realized that this is something that I should pursue it as a career.”

Learning the basics of traditional eastern makeup in Pakistan, Sadia expanded her skill set by completing additional courses when she moved to Canada. The change of cultural scenery in Toronto inspired Sadia to adapt her artistry to evolving styles of makeup within different ethnicities.

Being a makeup artist I have to keep an eye on all the trends that are currently going on as well as keeping in mind our traditional makeup styles,” she says.

Sadia says that she works meticulously with each client to ensure they look picture-perfect for their celebration. “My clients are mostly attracted to my eye makeup looks and also my versatility of makeup. I do different things with different clients. With whoever comes to get their makeup done by me, I want to understand what they want and then give them my own ideas as well. That being said, clients usually trust my expertise,” she says.

An artist of all trades, Sadia not only transforms the faces of her clients but executes their intricate hairstyles for the big day.

In collaboration with clothing stylists and the likes of India’s best models, Sadia creates and presents true works of art. “It looks like I am doing my hobby and being paid … what else can you expect from life?” says Sadia.

Sadia’s favourite look is featured below where she incorporated her own flare into a traditional Pakistani bridal look. “I created this look with a combination of retro hair style with modern makeup,” she says, “of course dark lips was one of the important parts of Indian makeup but now things are changing and girls now like to wear nude and different colours as well.” Rich kohl eyeliner has been used to rim the eyes of Indian women since ancient times and is currently still an urban fashion trend in India. The soft, jet-black stick accents the eye and dramatically defines the lash-line. Fluttery false eyelashes follow for further drama.
